An old school blackberry will run you $599 without a contract! If you don't want to get ganked by high prices take a look at eBay.
Even if you are an eBay newb you'll save a chunk of change. You can check your sellers reputation by clicking the #s next to their name. Their other transactions feedback is listed for all to see. If you are bidding on a phone and the prices gets too high, just take a breath and move on to another auction. There's always a new one ending in 5 minutes. Most sellers even give you a UPS / FedEx tracking number so you can follow your new phone all the way to your door.
